The first thing you need to learn before playing the piano is the piano notes. What are they called? A regular piano keyboard has 88 keys on it including the black notes. The first notes to learn are the white notes, but how do go about memorizing the names of all those white notes. There are many different sizes of keyboards. Sixty-one and seventy-six note keyboards are standard for electronic keyboards, and pianos are traditionally eighty-eight notes. No matter what the size of keyboard there are only seven white notes to learn. Black notes are associated to the white notes and are known as sharps and flats. So, firstly let’s learn the seven note names. They are C, D, E, F, G, A and B. Wherever on the piano you play you will be using one of these notes names. You will see that from C to G is alphabetical, the reason I haven’t started with A is because when you start learning to play the piano you will be using C as one of the first notes you ever play and it will also be a very important note and will help you relate to the other notes particularly on sheet music. Now you know the notes, your next step is to find them on a piano. The easiest way to do this is to look at the piano keyboard, if you don’t have a keyboard, find a picture of one on the internet. Now, just look at the keyboard carefully and you will see sets of two black notes and sets of three black notes. Look at a set of two black notes first. Starting with the black note on the left, notice a white note to its immediate left this note is called C, the white note to its immediate right is called D, and this is also between the two black notes. Finally, the white note to the right of the second black note is called E. So all the notes in this section of two black notes starting at the left are called C, D and E. Depending on the size of your keyboard you will see up to eight sets of two black notes together, these are the same and also use our three notes C, D and E. The only difference between the sets is the pitch of the notes. On the far left of the keyboard, notes will sound lower in pitch and to the right, notes will sound higher. The next shape you are looking for is three black notes together and these notes are surrounded by four white notes. Starting from the left again these notes are called F, G, A and B. That’s it; you have learned all the white notes on a keyboard. The two black note and three note shapes are repeated on the whole keyboard and so are the notes. With a little bit of practice you should be able to find any note on the piano. Just remember that every two black note shapes are surrounded by C, D and E, and every three note shape is surrounded by F, G, A and B.

Why should anybody look for a keyboard with 88 keys? On first instance, the obvious reason that comes out is that one may not be able to afford a piano with the traditional looks – be it acoustic or digital. Cost, and to some extent the fact that it needs more space are the primary reasons for someone choosing a keyboard which has 88 keys. Somebody who has started to learn keyboards on 61 keys, and is inclined to go to the advanced level, will need a keyboard with 88 keys. Whatever is the style of music that you want to learn – classical, jazz, blues, etc. you will need 88 keys to play the advanced pieces. But moving to a digital piano is a costlier option than may be getting your 61-key exchanged for a keyboard which has 88 keys, if budget is of high consideration. If you add the advantage of portability to it, it seems even more rational to go in for that since you can even take it along with you if you need to perform. If you are worried about what sort of keys these keyboards will have, then relax. You get keyboards that have graded hammer action as well, similar to that on acoustic grand pianos. So the touch and feel of your keyboard is not going to change. You also have the option of attaching sustain pedals to these keyboards. There are a lot of manufacturers out there who make music keyboards that have more than 61 keys. You can explore Yamaha, Roland, and Korg keyboards if you are looking for 88 key keyboards.

If you are looking for a keyboard that will be user friendly and will help you to learn music, if you are a beginner then Casio is the best brand for you. Almost all the models of Casio are good for children and beginners as well as established musicians. The Casio CTK 3000 keyboard is one of the models of Casio which has some great features and will be perfect for use. The Casio CTK keyboard has built in tones and it includes the tones of piano and other acoustic instruments too. This keyboard has a 48 note polyphony, which is great because it will reduce the chances of the notes dropping. The keyboard has 61 keys and has 2 sensitivity levels, which help it to respond to your touch. It has as many as 400 tones and each of the tones are of high quality and includes a stereo grand piano tone. There are total 150 rhythms among which 55 of them are ethnic rhythms and 20 of them are patterned like piano. It also has a lesson system which is directly supported by Casio. It has audio inputs with which you can connect MP3 players. Other features include a USB port and a pitch wheel, which helps with additional expression of the sound. All these features make the Casio CTK 3000 keyboard more realistic as well as very much expressive like no model before and the price range is even quite low. This keyboard even has a song bank controller and a LCD, which displays songs and lyrics. The batteries required are AA size and 6 in number but if you get a Casio AD5R keyboard power adapter then you will save on the cost of batteries. A song book is also available with it and a rest where you can keep your song book to view the songs properly. The notes can be played delicately due to the presence of touch response keys on the keyboard.

If you are seriously considering learning to play the electronic keyboards, then a standard 61 keys or a 5-octave keyboard is a must. But after a few months or may be in a year, depending on how soon you pick up things, you will realize that 61 keys are not enough, especially if you are playing a lot of classical based songs.

There are a lot of famous classical pieces that you cannot play on a keyboard with 61 keys. In that case, the next best option is to go in for a keyboard with 76 keys. An electronic keyboard with 76 keys should help you play most of the classical songs. A 76-key keyboard is also known as a 6 and a half octave keyboard.

Ideally a complete piano length i.e. 88 keys would be an ideal keyboard for playing all the classical songs, but then if you are also looking for some portability, a 76-key keyboard will be helpful. It will still be much easier to carry around than an 88-key keyboard.

A 76-key keyboard is not usually the first keyboard owned by somebody who is starting out. A keyboard of this size is bought only once you have learnt to play keyboards for some time.

Another benefit of owning a 76-key keyboard would be the hundreds of musical styles that come built-in those keyboards. You should be able to play a lot of songs with a variety of musical styles, ranging from classical to contemporary.

The Casio WK series, Yamaha’s DGX / YPG Series, and Roland’s E and EXR series are the most popular 76-key keyboards.

Great Deals on 76-Key Keyboards

If you’re looking for a reasonably priced piano replacement, look no further than the DGX-230. It is the music student or professional musicians answer to I need more keys! and many music teachers encourage new students to get a keyboard that will grow with their needs. It features 76 non-weighted keys that not only look like piano keys but have a Graded Soft Touch (GST) action with different levels of resistance, making it easier for a budding musician to move to an acoustic or digital piano. The DGX-230 delivers on its piano theme with a special mode of fingering called Full Keyboard Mode. This allows the player to play the keyboard like a piano; for example a chord with the right hand and bass notes with the left. When using the accompaniment feature, the virtual band will follow these chords. Traditional portable keyboards normally require you to chord on the left side of the keyboard, in the bass section, which is foreign to most piano players. The DGX-230 is a (more…)
